Here’s a self-loving New Year’s idea!
A resolution too often turns into a demand. Too often that opens up a Pandora’s Box and all kinds of un-self-loving feelings and repercussions start spilling out: blame, disappointment, self-criticism.
While resolutions start full of hope and excitement, too often a negative aspect of the desire to change seems to take over. We’re overcome by the shadow side of the message: we must change this or that about ourselves; we must do better, look better, be better! In short, the message seems to be that we are not good enough as we are.
Sheesh! That’s no way to treat a lady (or a man)! Instead, let’s do the self-loving thing. Let’s GIVE ourselves a gift this year.
Let’s reward ourselves for who we are and what we do. And let’s set ourselves up for success and even more gratification throughout the year!
Let’s plan for delight and self-approval. Let’s structure our future happiness right now. Let’s set ourselves up for success!
It’s easy. Here’s how this awesome exercise in self-love works…
- Get yourself a big jar.
- Throughout the year, every time something pleases you, write a note to yourself about your that happy moment, or about every achievement and milestone, big or small.
- At the end of the year, or points in between, whenever you need a little loving boost…
Have yourself a self-love fest! Walk down memory lane. Read about all the awesome stuff you enjoyed, shared, delighted in, appreciated, accomplished, overcame, or dared to do this year!
Are YOU in?
See how easy this is?!
I am a HUGE FAN OF RECYCLING, so my first note was on the back side of a business card. Then my eye fell upon some envelops on my desk and I thought: “what an awesome way to recycle all the scraps of paper that cross my desk!”
No sooner had I gotten excited about recycling than I stumbled across some cards I had painted in preparation for another project which I never got around to. They fell into my hands as if they were made for this moment.
What I noticed by doing this exercise in self-love is that once I started doing something nice for myself, the floodgates opened.
It’s as if you just need to take that first step, and then the Universe chimes in and it really starts to get fun.
And won’t it be lovely to write myself mini-love letters all year long on such pretty paper? And won’t it be even more fun to read them?
I invite you to leave your comments, below.
I’d love to see pictures of your jar. Feel free to post them here or in my FB group, Leaders in Self-Love.
Do you have a similar practice? I’d love to hear about it.
What’s in your heart as we start the new year?
