But how about when your nose is running and you’re crying your heart out and you’re feeling like something the cat dragged in – how do you “Love Life” then?
Hallmark cards aside, what is it to really love life?
It’s EASY to love life when you’re playing with a puppy, flipping your fabulous just-styled hair, and walking on the beach blowing bubbles and rainbow gazing.
As Elisabeth Kubler-Ross put it, “People are like stained glass windows: They sparkle and shine when the sun is out, but when the darkness sets in their true beauty is revealed only if there is a light within.”
How do we find our light, even in the darkness?
To “Love Life” is to ask not “Why is this happening TO me?” but rather to ask “Why is this happening FOR me?”
Here’s how to LOVE LIFE when the going gets tough:
I’ve experienced some emotional upheaval this past week, and I have to admit that I feel vulnerable, like the pieces haven’t all settled yet.
What happened? Well, without going into great detail, some interactions triggered some deep feelings.
I hold to the rule that if you are bothered by something for more than 3 minutes, then you are in your history. Sure enough, these interactions touched some deep core issues for me.
Life is a wonderful school.
The universe hammered home the fact that it was time for me to look at and transmute these inner beliefs: the lesson was repeated in three separate incidents, each of which reflected an aspect of the beliefs I needed to face.
(Thankfully nothing earthshaking happened. The incidents were all in a ‘minor key’ – it’s just that my emotions tapped right into a major response of deeply held core beliefs.)
What creativity the universe uses to teach its lessons!
A full cast was rounded up and the scenes were artfully staged. No expense or effort was spared: a friend was brought into the act that I hadn’t heard from in 10 years; an incident at work played out that was the culmination of two years of backstory; and another incident at home rounded out the trifecta.
Thank you, Universe!
I accept these lessons with gratitude.
I have come to know that my path – as bumpy as it may have been or still is – is the source of my strength, my learning and my wisdom.
I am not sure I’ve absorbed everything I need to learn from this latest series of lessons. I only know that my deep core beliefs are inheritances from earliest childhood, and perhaps even from past lives. It is time to let them go. I don’t particularly like housekeeping, but I am happy to do this kind of deep cleaning.
I love windswept hair, puppies, bubbles, beaches, and rainbows just as much as the next person,
but most of all…
I love life.
My love is not conditional.
It doesn’t depend upon things being LOVELY.
It doesn’t depending upon the sun hitting the wheat waving in the field just so, or a win at the office, or flowers from my husband, or anything else. I love life in all it’s complex, gritty, bumpy, boring, stubborn, mysterious awesomeness.
I love life happy or sad, rain or shine. We need only remember that April showers bring May flowers, and that our experiences are happening FOR us, and not TO us, and we can begin to embrace it all.
“April showers bring May flowers.” Corney, hokey and trite? Yes, but still true.
And that awareness leads to the next:
Life is not a highway strewn with flowers,
Still it holds a goodly share of bliss,
When the sun gives way to April showers,
Here is the point you should never miss.
Though April showers may come your way,
They bring the flowers that bloom in May.
So if it’s raining, have no regrets,
Because it isn’t raining rain, you know, (It’s raining violets,)
(April Showers – Lyrics by Al Jolson)
May we all be blessed to think of the flowers, even in the midst of the fiercest storms.
I would love to hear your comments, stories and ‘aha moments’ about asking not “Why is this happening TO me?” but rather, “Why is this happening FOR me?”
