Did you ever go to a foreign land? Remember how it feels when you don’t speak the language and the customs seem a bit strange?
Do you recall how your eyes gradually became accustomed to the sights, and your ears eventually adjusted to the foreign sounds?
Then, do you remember coming home again? Suddenly everyone speaks your language. You understand the customs. You fit in.Things make sense! It’s easy in a way you almost forgot about.
That’s what speaking with writer, speaker, teacher, and nutritionist Evita Ochel, feels like. It’s a homecoming to ideas about food and nutrition that make sense on a deep, intuitive level.
Evita draws a contrast between whole foods, produced by nature, and processed foods, produced by industry and factories. To Evita, whole foods are our home territory. She explains: “every single animal in nature knows how to feed itself. This information is intuitively, instinctually in us.”
However, like returning home from a foreign land, sometimes even our original culture can feel a bit strange to us, now that we’ve adjusted to another setting. The problem, she explains, is “culture, conditioning, the news, the media, etc.” She continues: “We come in knowing exactly what to eat. Then quickly we start getting walls and layers and cloaks” over our innate understanding.
I’ve seen this happen first-hand with my daughter. As a baby she evinced a rather sophisticated palate. She leaned towards salty food, such as olives and sardines (!). She enjoyed plain yogurt and actively disliked the sweetened kind. However, try steering a child away from our culture’s magnetic force-field of sweets! Teachers, friends and neighbors plied her with sweets, candies and lollipops. Gradually yet inevitably her tastes veered more towards the cultural norm of sugar, sugar, and more sugar, and away from her natural proclivities.
Processed food is that powerful. Sugar is that addictive. And the cultural forces are that strong.
It turns out it’s not always easy to go home again. Sometimes we need someone to guide us back to the principles we once knew so well, but may have forgotten.
Nutritionist Evita Ochel is here to help us do just that. She is passionate about helping us “clear away the noise and confusion and revert back to trusting ourselves, listening to our body and going with the basic wisdom of nature.”
