Sounds like something your grandma might have said, along the lines of: “Look on the bright side.”
Humble though it may be, this bit of grandmotherly wisdom contains the key to personal power and holds all the tools you need to live a happy and fulfilled life.
The key to personal power? All the tools you need to live a happy and fulfilled life? That’s a tall claim!
Does this mean becoming a Pollyanna and smiling all the time?
Does this mean putting on blinders and not seeing anything sad or painful?
It means the ability to dance with what life is showing you.
You are a creative life force. You have a vision of what you want to happen, and how you want things to be. Wonderful creativity! Powerful manifesting! Great!
But here’s the thing…
You are not alone.
You are in partnership with this thing called life.
Think of it as a partner dance, a tango perhaps, in which each partner inspires and collaborates with the other, sometimes leading, sometimes following, at times driving each other to new heights of passion and creativity, other times skirting another couple on the dance floor.
The energy flows between you as you move together with, and in response to one another.
When our vision gets blocked, or when an obstacle blocks our path, we can choose to heker ha ra – to ‘know the bad’:
We focus on the obstacle.
We try to dominate it by pummeling it with our fists.
We try to win an argument with it, by concentrating on why it shouldn’t be there and how much better things would be if it weren’t.
We may succumb to depression as we feel powerless to change it, and sad that our vision is not fully reflected in our reality.
There the obstacle sits, unbroken by our pummeling, unmoved by our conviction that life would be better without it, and untouched by our depression. We are stuck in front of an immovable object, with all our energy focusing, in one way or another, on it.
Or, we can choose to heker ha tov – to ‘know the good,’ or look on the bright side, as granny might have said.
We look beyond, above, and below the obstacle. With our vision of our desired good firmly fixed in our minds, we work our way around the obstacle.
We stay flexible. We gain skills. We do not allow ourselves to get stuck in the face of the obstacle, rather, we keep moving and flowing in the dance.
This is our power: to do what we are able to do…AND RELEASE THE REST!
And that is no small thing, for that is our power to find happiness and success in this life, in this moment, in this situation, now.
Flow through your life like a bird responding to the wind, shifting with every shift in the current, yet all the while keeping his eye on the goal.
Dominance isn’t power. Responsiveness is power. Flexibility is aliveness.
Remember that, “in the confrontation between the stream and the rock, the stream always wins – not through strength, but by perseverance.” (H. Jackson Brown, Jr.)
There is nothing in this world that can truly stop us.
Just sometimes our energy needs to be slightly redirected, away from the obstacle, and towards the opening.
Know the good!
This, by the way, is the follow-up to last week’s post, in which I promised to expand upon what creates happiness in the present moment. This is it…
Keep seeing the good, keep responding, and flowing around the obstacles, and keep on dancing with your partner in creation and creativity: life, itself.
